775. City anniversary
Schmallenberg celebrates birthday
2019 promises to be an eventful year in the centre of Schmallenberg. 775 years ago, it was granted city rights, the right to hold markets, mint coins and exercise jurisdiction. Reason enough to celebrate this foundation stone for 775 years of urban development in a fitting manner. All inhabitants, visitors and guests are cordially invited to discover Schmallenberg's history and to be present at one of the numerous events.

Historical market
A journey through the centuries on 07. & 08. September 2019
On this weekend, a market event invites you to take a journey through the centuries. The church square around the parish church of St. Alexander and the historic town centre will be the setting for this event.
The entire market takes place on the area of the historic city centre and is bordered by the 'old' city wall. A band of light gives an idea of the course of this former boundary.
On the church square a stage will be set up on which an entertaining music programme, theatre performances, rallies, shows and much more can be seen. Our Schmallenberg gastronomes will take care of the physical well-being. At nightfall, a very special surprise awaits our visitors.
A special thanks to our partners & sponsors, without whom the market event or the festival weekend would not have been possible.

Companies in the course of time
Schmallenberg is a strong business location. With stories ranging from the origins of companies in garages to the conquest of international markets, the most diverse companies present themselves in the course of time. Small and large exhibits illustrate the journey through time.
Tourism
Nostalgic things from holidays in the Schmallenberg Sauerland meet ultra-modern, digital travel.
Health
Relief action 'Kinder helfen Kindern' on the subject of vaccinations, painting action by Schmallenberg primary school children
Wimereux, town twinning
Schmallenberg's twin town of Wimereux (France) provides historical insights into its history with delicacies and souvenirs of the Napoleonic era.
Agriculture
How did the inhabitants of Schmallenberg used to live? How has self-catering developed into an economic sector? Endangered breeds of domestic animals such as the old German Rotbunte were also kept in the Schmallenberg Sauerland 775 years ago. Visitors can marvel at large and small farm animals. The complete range from processing and machines to the final product can be marvelled at, touched and even tasted. Milk, meat, cereals, fruit and vegetables are presented under the motto 'From the region for the region'. The history of the region and of the people with customs and culture in the countryside in the context of the past and present can also be discovered on the town hall square.
Hops and malt, God save it: This is how the Schmallenberg brewery and Anno 1516 presents its anniversary beer.
City Gate
A palisade gate with an earth wall from the 13th century fills the gap in the old town wall.
Handicrafts
Over the centuries, as well as today, craftsmanship has been of central importance - not least, much has developed in Schmallenberg through the town band of 1822. The various stations around the town hall provide a perfect insight into the craftsmanship of half-timbered houses, slate and the processing of wood and metals.
Excavation
Is the 'narrow house' really built on the remains of the old city wall? Where did it run, what did it look like and are there still remains? The town of Schmallenberg is trying to get to the bottom of these and many other questions with the help of the archaeologists of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe during the market. In the surroundings of the community centre 'Balzer Schmalen' or better known as 'Schmalen Haus', which today houses the town archive, an open excavation section is being created. The visitors can watch the work live
Forestry
The tour continues in the forest in a varied manner. With the history of the Schmallenberg forest, large wooden wagons and great join-in activities, the foresters are waiting for the big and small visitors.
Hunting
Hunting gives visitors a vivid insight into life in the forest and the profession of the hunter. Aiming with bow and arrow as in former times or modern laser rifle can be tried out. Delicious game dishes are available and there is also music.
Fishing
The fishing industry offers exciting things about water, water bodies and life in water at its stands. Different types of fish, fishing, the profession of the fisherman and much more is shown. Culinary delicacies can also be tasted.
Fire
From history, the subject of fire protection has a formative role in Schmallenberg. Three devastating fires, the last one in 1822, have changed the face of the town. A large exhibition on fire protection as well as old and new fire engines shows how strong the developments are. Various participatory activities transport young and old visitors into the life of a firefighter.
Mobility
From walking, rolling, driving and flying - the development of mobility from hiking boots to bicycles, from vintage cars to electric cars is staged. Nevertheless, hiking is now once again ultra-modern. While the Floigenkasper of Schmallenberg's history still had starting difficulties, airplanes are opening up new worlds. Whether motorised or as gliders, visitors to the market can see the fascination of flying for themselves.
And how did the inhabitants of Schmallenberg behave in winter? The locomotion in winter, gliding on snow, quickly developed into a popular leisure sport, the roots of which can be traced back to the 19th century in Schmallenberg. Games, sports and fun for young and old are guaranteed in this theme area as well.
City Gate
Another historical entrance to the old town is brought to life by the reproduction of guard houses with a barrier from the 18th century.
Collect stamps at great events for children and young people
There is a lot for the younger visitors to discover, marvel, sniff, try out, touch and feel on the entire market area. As a reward, stamps are collected and at the end there is a certificate of participation - a children's certificate of honour - and participation in a competition with great prizes.
The principle:
With a stamped card, which is available at the entrances to the market, the children and young people set off. Which actions are available and where they are located is indicated by signs throughout the market area. Each successfully completed action is stamped. With 12 collected stamps, which can be "worked out" at the more than 20 stations, the card is exchanged for a children's certificate of honour at the stand of the Sparkasse in Weststraße and the ticket goes into the lottery drum. The drawing of the winners takes place on Sunday from 18:30 hrs on the large festival stage at the church square (under notarial supervision).
The prizes:
- Alu-City-Scooter from Rabattz
- Food vouchers of the Pizzeria Capri
- Goods vouchers from the Knappstein furniture store
- Vouchers from Brillen Rottler
- Jumping times in the Jump-Hall of the Freizeitwelt Sauerland

The illustrated book
This book is THE work for the city anniversary - deliberately with little text and a lot of pictures. In doing so, we are also taking a journey through time again. In addition to many old photographs, special attention is paid to the past and present. Current photos in the same angle show details of how they can be found in the city today. This brings back memories and some readers understand why the houses in Schmallenberg have names (and rarely the house number is known). Even the price of 18,25€ has a historical meaning!
The book is available in the WOLL-Verlag online shop or at the following sales outlets in Schmallenberg
