Historical market
A journey through the centuries on September 07 & 08, 2019
A market event invites you to experience a journey through the centuries on this weekend. The church square around the parish church St. Alexander and the historic town center will be the setting for this event.
The entire market in the area of the historic town center is bordered by the 'old' town wall. A band of light gives an idea of the course of this former boundary.
A stage will be set up on the church square, where an entertaining music program, theater performances, demonstrations, performances and much more can be seen. Our Schmallenberg restaurateurs will take care of your physical well-being. At nightfall, a very special surprise awaits our visitors.
Special thanks go to our partners and sponsors, without whom the market and the festival weekend would not have been possible.
All partners & sponsors
Spectacular, visual staging of epochal and formative events from Schmallenberg's history.
Fascinating insights into the town's history are presented on the façade of the Alexanderhaus building on both days in the dark. Lasers, light, video and background music guarantee goosebumps and moments that visitors and locals will not soon forget.
We celebrate together with a large number of Schmallenberg stakeholders at Schmallenberg.
The market is divided into 11 themed areas, which are spread over the entire area of the historic Altstadt in the west and Oststraße and around the town hall. Each theme area has Schmallenberg historical significance and picks up on the motto 'Time Travel'. In addition to medieval tools, there is a 3D printer, for example. Schmallenberg associations and various exhibitors from industry and retail will characterize the themes. In addition to well-chosen costumes, demonstrations and hands-on activities round off the market events.
Discover the historical course of the city wall. Of course, we had to make a few changes here, as the exact course of the wall cannot be marked. The 'new' or 'recreated' city wall invites you to take a stroll along the wall, especially in the evening when it is illuminated. The Verkehrsverein Schmallenberg e.V. offers 45-minute guided tours along the illuminated city wall in the evening:
Festival stage
Music program, rallies, performances and much more: there is a non-stop program on the festival stage on the church square. These performances are rounded off by a variety of activities in the individual themed areas, e.g. guided tours of the town by day and at night, craft demonstrations, beer brewing, draught cows and much more.
Theater performances
Die Brandnacht von Schmallenberg (1822) - With this history of the town on the theater stage, experienced actors from the theater associations Fleckenberg and Lenne in historical costumes show the causes and consequences of the great fire of 1822 (developed and directed by Berthold Zeppenfeld). The exact program points can be found in the program flyer or here on the website.
Collect stamps at great activities for children & young people
There is plenty for younger visitors to discover, try out, touch, sniff out and marvel at throughout the market area. As a reward stamps are collected and at the end there is a certificate of participation, a children's certificate of honor and participation in a competition with great prizes. More on this topic at the end of this page or in a separate children's and youth flyer, which the kids and teens will also need to collect stamps on the market weekend.
Take part & win
If you want to take part in the big competition, you have the chance to win great, high-quality prizes. From an AudioArt picture frame for the perfect sound, a travel voucher to vouchers in the following areas: Wellness, events, sporting events, sightseeing, Essen & drinking, shopping in Schmallenberg.
Participation is easy!
Anyone who buys a Schmallenberg button is automatically entered into the competition. Each button has its own winning number. Does the 'Schmalen Haus' really stand on the remains of the old town wall? Where did it run, what did it look like and are there really still remains of the wall in the ground? The town is trying to get to the bottom of these and many other questions with the help of achaeologists from the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe. An open excavation cut is being made in the area around the 'Schmalen Haus'. Visitors can watch the work live during the market.

Agriculture
How did the inhabitants of Schmallenberg feed themselves in the past? How did home catering develop into an economic sector? Endangered domestic animal breeds such as the old German red cattle were also kept in Schmallenberg 775 years ago. Sauerland were already being kept. Visitors can marvel at large and small farm animals. The entire spectrum from processing and machinery to the end product can be admired, touched and even tasted. Milk, meat, grain, fruit and vegetables are presented under the motto 'From the region for the region'. The history of the region and the people with customs and culture in the countryside in the past and today can also be discovered on the town hall square.
Hops and malt, God forbid: This is how the Schmallenberger Braumanufaktur and Anno 1516 present their anniversary beer.
Town gate
A palisade gate with an earth rampart from the 13th century forms a gap in the old town wall at this point.
Craftsmanship
Over the centuries, and still today, craftsmanship has been of central importance - not least in Schmallenberg much has been developed in terms of craftsmanship as a result of the town bond of 1822. The various stations around the town hall provide a perfect insight into the craftsmanship of half-timbered houses, slate and the processing of wood and metals.
Excavation
Does the 'Schmalen Haus' really stand on the remains of the old town wall? Where did it run, what did it look like and are there still any remains? The town is trying to answer these and many other questions Schmallenberg with the help of archaeologists from the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe during the market. An open excavation will be carried out in the area around the 'Balzer Schmalen' town house, better known as the 'Schmalen Haus', which now houses the town archives. Visitors can watch the work live
Forestry
There is plenty of variety in the forest. With the history of the Schmallenberg forest, a large timber wagon and great hands-on activities, the foresters await visitors of all ages.
Hunting management
The Hunting section gives visitors a vivid insight into life in the forest and the hunter's profession. Aiming with a bow and arrow as in the past or a modern laser rifle can be tried out. Delicious food from the game kitchen is available and there is also music.
Fishing
At its stands, the fishery offers exciting things to do with water, bodies of water and life in bodies of water. Different types of fish, fishing, the profession of fish farmer and much more will be on display. There are also culinary delicacies to try.
Fire
From a historical perspective, the topic of fire protection in Schmallenberg a formative role. Three devastating town fires, the last in 1822, have changed the face of the town. A large exhibition on fire protection and old and new fire engines shows the extent of the developments. Various hands-on activities allow visitors of all ages to experience the life of a firefighter.
Mobility
From walking, rolling, driving and flying - the development of mobility from hiking boots to bicycles and vintage cars to electric cars is presented. At the same time, hiking is very modern again today. While the Floigenkasper of Schmallenberg's history still had difficulties getting off the ground, airplanes are opening up new worlds. Whether motorized or as gliders, visitors to the market can experience the fascination of flying for themselves.
And how did the inhabitants of Schmallenberg behave in winter in the past? Locomotion in winter, gliding on snow, quickly developed into a popular leisure sport whose roots can be traced back to the 19th century. Schmallenberg can be traced back to the 19th century. Games, sport and fun for young and old are also guaranteed in this themed area.
Town gate
Another historical entrance to the Altstadt is brought to life by the replica of the 18th century guardhouse with a turnpike.
Collect stamps at great activities for children and young people
There is plenty for younger visitors to discover, marvel at, sniff out, try out and touch throughout the entire market area. As a reward stamps are collected and at the end there is a certificate of participation - a children's certificate of honor - as well as participation in a competition with great prizes.
The principle:
With a stamp card, which is available at the entrances to the market, the children and young people set off. Signs throughout the store indicate which activities are available and where they are located. Stamps are collected for each successfully completed activity. Once 12 stamps have been collected, which can be "earned" at over 20 stations, the card is exchanged for a children's certificate of honor at the Sparkasse stand at Weststraße and the ticket goes into the prize draw drum. The year was 1244, when the former settlement at the "Smalen Burg" was granted town rights, market and minting rights as well as jurisdiction. However, it is assumed that there was a castle here long before that, which served to protect the monastery. Grafschaft served to protect the monastery. The first documentary reference to it dates back to 1228.
Battles and wars are the reason why we no longer see anything of the castle today. Nevertheless, these disturbances also led to the fortification of the settlement... This is how history takes its course.
Immerse yourself in a journey through the centuries ...
Zur Stadtgeschichte...The logo
A journey through time to our town is also hidden in the logo. Schmallenberg's first town seal from 1244 on the left symbolized the beginning. A journey through good and bad times with all the developments leads us to today, where the current town coat of arms can be seen on the right-hand side.
The motto
Time travel through the centuries
Without its eventful history Schmallenberg not be what it is today. We are proud of this and look back with pleasure at how the town center has developed over the course of time. This is also made clear by our membership of the 'Historic Town and Village Centers of NRW' association. Our motto sums it up in a nutshell: In our anniversary year, we are shedding light on our town's history in all its facets.
The illustrated book
This book is THE work for the city's anniversary - deliberately with little text and lots of pictures. It also takes us on a journey through time. In addition to many old photos, special attention is paid to comparing the past and present. Current photos in the same position show sections as they can be found in the city today. This brings back memories and many a reader will understand why Schmallenberg the houses have names (and the house number is rarely known). Even the price of €18.25 has historical significance!
The book is available in the online store of the Woll publishing house or at the following sales outlets in Schmallenberg:
