Far away from everyday life
Encounters the Schmallenberg way
Want to get to know the region intensively? Encounters are the order of the day in the Schmallenberg Sauerland and the vacation region Eslohe. The focus is on encounters - with the landscape, with special places and with the people who value and care for their homeland. A herb teacher from HeimatFreu(n)de who shows you local herbs, a hotel manager who takes guests on a hiking tour or serves a delicious forest menu - everyday life quickly recedes into the distance here.
Fill up on greenery
Wooded mountain ridges, romantic valleys and picturesque villages and towns where one half-timbered house follows the next: the region lies in the middle of Germany's second largest nature park, the Rothaargebirge, and is characterized by mountains and forests. It is part of the first "Wanderbares Deutschland" quality region. A total of 2000 kilometers of marked premium and themed hiking trails lead through tranquil nature, up to panoramic heights and to historically significant sites such as the Sauerland-soul places. With the Rothaarsteig and the Sauerland-Höhenflug, two long-distance hiking trails also run through the region. Cycling enthusiasts can also choose between various themed cycle routes, such as the Sauerlandradring or the popular Golddorf cycle route, which leads to the region's seven golden villages. Those interested in culture will be surprised by the diverse cultural program away from the big cities with festivals such as Textile, top-class concerts and exhibitions as well as popular events such as the Spiritual Summer.

Far away from everyday life
Encounters the Schmallenberg way
Wooded mountain ridges, romantic valleys and picturesque villages and towns where one half-timbered house follows the next: the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the vacation region Eslohe are located in the middle of Rothaargebirge, the second largest nature park in Germany and like a green recreational island between the conurbations of the Rhine, Main and Ruhr in North Rhine-Westfalen. Whether for a short break alone or a family vacation, the natural and living space of the region stands for encounters - with the landscape, with special places and with the people who value and care for them.
Encounter nature: Hiking and cycling in the region
The landscape is characterized by the many mountains and forests, which make up almost 60 percent of the area and are part of an evolved cultural landscape. One of the largest contiguous forest systems in Germany can be found here. The Schmallenberg Sauerland and the vacation region Eslohe are part of the first "Wanderbares Deutschland" quality region. A total of 2000 kilometers of marked premium and themed hiking trails lead through tranquil nature, up to panoramic heights and to historically significant sites with special stories such as the Sauerland-Seelenorte. With the well-known Rothaarsteig and the Sauerland-Höhenflug, two long-distance hiking trails also run through the region. A survey carried out by Schmallenberg Tourism revealed that guests here enjoy the panoramic views over the "swinging landscape", the peace and quiet and the fresh air and appreciate the wide range of opportunities to get out and about in nature. Cycling enthusiasts can choose between various themed cycle routes, such as the Bauernland cycle route or the popular Golddorf cycle route, which leads to the region's seven golden villages, or the Sauerlandradringwhich mostly runs along old railroad lines.
Meet people: Family-run inns and well-kept places
Across the Sauerland, the businesses in the region lead the star classification by the DEHOGA and the German Tourism Association DTV. In and around the well-kept villages you will find cozy and warm mountain chalets with panoramic views, feel-good rooms in 4- or 5-star hotels with sophisticated wellness and health offers, rustic inns, guesthouses and well-equipped vacation apartments with a view. Guests can choose from 350 establishments with around 4000 beds. Many have adapted to the needs of hikers, wellness enthusiasts and families. The cooperation Schmallenberger Kinderland brings together 26 vacation farms that have tailored their services to families. The region is also one of the few in Germany to bear the seal of the European Foundation for Allergy Research (ECARF) for the qualified orientation of its infrastructure towards allergy sufferers. Many of the businesses are family-run and the hosts have a long tradition. In addition to quality and service, personal contact with guests is particularly important to them.
Encountering special places: art, culture and tradition
Away from the big cities, the region's diverse cultural program surprises with its festivals such as Textile, top-class concerts and exhibitions as well as popular events such as the Spiritual Summer. The importance of values and traditions here is also reflected in the many small museums, for which dedicated locals have collected the special and important stories of their homeland. In addition, many creative minds have left their mark on the region with their work. They show the different faces of art and design in hidden galleries, on remote farms or at joint exhibitions. If you would like to get to know the region through the eyes of the locals, the HeimatFreu(n)de will take you on an exploratory tour through the region. They show you their home village, collect herbs with guests and locals alike or go stalking with them. Encounters the Schmallenberg way.

Story ideas
Topics you can tell great stories about here
In our latest magazine, we explain why the forest is so important to us, how we can best enjoy it and which people bring us closer to the forest. Perhaps there is a story for you, or a person you would like to get to know better.
The HeimatFreu(n)de are people from the region who show interested parties their very own Sauerland their very own. They take people to their favorite mountain, to their own garden or to a high seat in the forest. Special experiences, such as cooking with wild herbs, fondue hikes and kitchen parties, are combined with friendly encounters in a small group and people in love with their homeland Sauerländer:innen.
Whether in the Heilstollen, in the sauna relaxation room or on the farm bench, in the Schmallenberger Sauerland there are many places where you can relax, enjoy the moment and recharge your batteries. We can put together a few of these places for you. Please feel free to contact us:
Hiking in the rain? But yes! When the clouds hang between the fir trees and the rain drips rhythmically onto your hood, being outside feels really wild. The mountains then look mystical and nature has a magic all of its own. In fall and spring, there is a high probability that it will drizzle in the Schmallenberger Sauerland drizzle. So the trip is worth it!
