775 years Schmallenberg

775. City anniversary Schmallenberg celebrates birthday

2019 promises to be an eventful year in the centre of Schmallenberg. 775 years ago, it was granted city rights, the right to hold markets, mint coins and exercise jurisdiction. Reason enough to celebrate this foundation stone for 775 years of urban development in a fitting manner. All inhabitants, visitors and guests are cordially invited to discover Schmallenberg's history and to be present at one of the numerous events.

Historical market

A journey through the centuries on 07. & 08. September 2019

On this weekend, a market event invites you to take a journey through the centuries. The church square around the parish church of St. Alexander and the historic town centre will be the setting for this event.

The entire market takes place on the area of the historic city centre and is bordered by the 'old' city wall. A band of light gives an idea of the course of this former boundary.

On the church square a stage will be set up on which an entertaining music programme, theatre performances, rallies, shows and much more can be seen. Our Schmallenberg gastronomes will take care of the physical well-being. At nightfall, a very special surprise awaits our visitors.

A special thanks to our partners & sponsors, without whom the market event or the festival weekend would not have been possible.

Die Markt-Highlights

Spectacular, visual staging of epochal and formative events from Schmallenberg's history.
On both days in the dark, fascinating insights into the city's history are provided on the building facade of the Alexanderhaus. Laser, light, video and acoustic background music guarantee pure goose bumps and moments that visitors and locals will not forget so quickly.

With great participation of Schmallenberg actors we celebrate Schmallenberg together.
The market is divided into 11 theme areas, which are distributed over the entire area of the historic old town in West- and Oststraße as well as around the town hall. Each theme area has a historical significance for Schmallenberg and picks up the motto 'time travel'. In addition to medieval tools, there is also a 3D printer, for example. Schmallenberg associations and various exhibitors from industry and retail trade shape the themes in a characteristic way. In addition to a carefully selected costume, demonstrations and participatory activities round off the market events.

Discover the historical course of the city wall. Of course we had to move a little bit here, because the exact course cannot be marked for urban planning purposes. The 'new' or 'imitated' city wall invites you especially in the evening hours with the illumination to a stroll along the wall. The Verkehrsverein Schmallenberg e.V. offers guided tours of 45 minutes each along the illuminated city wall in the evening hours:

To the dates...

Festival stage
Music programme, rallies, performances and much more: On the festival stage on the church square there is a non-stop programme. These performances are rounded off by a variety of activities in the individual thematic areas, e.g. guided tours of the city during the day and at night, craft demonstrations, beer brewing, draught cows and much more.

Theatre performances
Die Brandnacht von Schmallenberg (1822) - With this city history on the theatre stage, experienced actors from the Fleckenberg and Lenne theatre associations in historical costumes show the causes and consequences of the great fire of 1822 (development under the direction and direction of Berthold Zeppenfeld). Of course, you will find the exact programme points in the programme flyer or here on the website.

To the stage program...

Collect stamps at great events for children and young people There is a lot for younger visitors to discover, try out, touch, sniff and marvel at on the
entire market area. As a reward, stamps are collected and at the end there is a certificate of participation, a children's certificate of honour, and participation in a competition with great prizes. More on this topic at the bottom of this page or in a separate flyer for children and teenagers, which the Kids & Teens also need for collecting stamps on the market weekend.

Now, about the children and youth activities...

The exhibits can be purchased on order.

To the photo exhibition...

Does the 'Narrow House' really stand on remains of the old city wall? Where did it run, what did it look like and are there really still remains of the wall in the ground? The town is trying to get to the bottom of these and many other questions with the help of the archaeologists of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe. In the surroundings of the 'Schmales Haus' an open excavation section is being created. Visitors can watch the work live while the market is going on.

27. Arnsberg ADAC Klassik
The automobile and motorcycle club is organising this year's classic car drive on Saturday, 07.09.19. Visitors to the market will be able to see real treasures from 11:45 a.m., as the exit leads from Arnsberg to Schmallenberg. More than 70 vehicles find their way through Oststraße, Wimereuxstraße and Weststraße. Thus, the theme area mobility will be passed, where the vehicles will be presented. The moderation is organized by the Motorsportclub Schmallenberg. You can certainly take a photo or ask the drivers one or the other question, because the proud mobile owners are very happy to share their knowledge. The sight of the old- and youngtimers simply has to be enjoyed, so all visitors are cordially invited to experience the passage.

The subject areas

Time travel

The 775th anniversary is celebrated in the inner area of the 13th century city wall with great participation of Schmallenberg actors.

Culturally and culinary delights will be offered in the individual areas of the West- and Oststraße, on the church square and around the town hall.

Coinage

The historical market starts at the Sparkasse 'Mitten im Sauerland' (Weststraße 30-32): In
front of the main entrance there will be a demonstration of embossing. Medals will be pressed out of pewter with a historical spindle press.

Sale of silver medals for the 775th anniversary of the city.

City Gate and Historical Old Town

A gigantic replica of the city gate from the 16th century marks the entrance to the area of the old city wall. The largest of the three town gates of the settlement on the 'Narrow Hill' used to stand on this site. Exclusive drawings of the historic town centre can be purchased here as a souvenir of the anniversary.

Children's events

There will be numerous sporting and creative activities for children and young people.

Textile history

The history of the textile industry is one of the most formative for the city. FALKE has emerged from the changing times as an internationally successful company. Presented are the company's own history, milestones in product development, ultra-modern knitting technology and much more.
LIVE demonstration with one of the most modern knitting machines and sale of the anniversary stocking '775 Years City of Schmallenberg', limited to 775 pieces (proceeds will be donated).

In the Alexanderhaus: Insights into the contemporary witness project of the TEXTILE Workshop

Companies in the course of time

Schmallenberg is a strong business location. With stories ranging from the origins of companies in garages to the conquest of international markets, the most diverse companies present themselves in the course of time. Small and large exhibits illustrate the journey through time.

Tourism

Nostalgic things from holidays in the Schmallenberg Sauerland meet ultra-modern, digital travel.

Health

Relief action 'Kinder helfen Kindern' on the subject of vaccinations, painting action by Schmallenberg primary school children

Wimereux, town twinning

Schmallenberg's twin town of Wimereux (France) provides historical insights into its history with delicacies and souvenirs of the Napoleonic era.

Agriculture

How did the inhabitants of Schmallenberg used to live? How has self-catering developed into an economic sector? Endangered breeds of domestic animals such as the old German Rotbunte were also kept in the Schmallenberg Sauerland 775 years ago. Visitors can marvel at large and small farm animals. The complete range from processing and machines to the final product can be marvelled at, touched and even tasted. Milk, meat, cereals, fruit and vegetables are presented under the motto 'From the region for the region'. The history of the region and of the people with customs and culture in the countryside in the context of the past and present can also be discovered on the town hall square.

Hops and malt, God save it: This is how the Schmallenberg brewery and Anno 1516 presents its anniversary beer.

City Gate

A palisade gate with an earth wall from the 13th century fills the gap in the old town wall.

Handicrafts

Over the centuries, as well as today, craftsmanship has been of central importance - not least, much has developed in Schmallenberg through the town band of 1822. The various stations around the town hall provide a perfect insight into the craftsmanship of half-timbered houses, slate and the processing of wood and metals.

Excavation

Is the 'narrow house' really built on the remains of the old city wall? Where did it run, what did it look like and are there still remains? The town of Schmallenberg is trying to get to the bottom of these and many other questions with the help of the archaeologists of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe during the market. In the surroundings of the community centre 'Balzer Schmalen' or better known as 'Schmalen Haus', which today houses the town archive, an open excavation section is being created. The visitors can watch the work live

Forestry

The tour continues in the forest in a varied manner. With the history of the Schmallenberg forest, large wooden wagons and great join-in activities, the foresters are waiting for the big and small visitors.

Hunting

Hunting gives visitors a vivid insight into life in the forest and the profession of the hunter. Aiming with bow and arrow as in former times or modern laser rifle can be tried out. Delicious game dishes are available and there is also music.

Fishing

The fishing industry offers exciting things about water, water bodies and life in water at its stands. Different types of fish, fishing, the profession of the fisherman and much more is shown. Culinary delicacies can also be tasted.

Fire

From history, the subject of fire protection has a formative role in Schmallenberg. Three devastating fires, the last one in 1822, have changed the face of the town. A large exhibition on fire protection as well as old and new fire engines shows how strong the developments are. Various participatory activities transport young and old visitors into the life of a firefighter.

Mobility

From walking, rolling, driving and flying - the development of mobility from hiking boots to bicycles, from vintage cars to electric cars is staged. Nevertheless, hiking is now once again ultra-modern. While the Floigenkasper of Schmallenberg's history still had starting difficulties, airplanes are opening up new worlds. Whether motorised or as gliders, visitors to the market can see the fascination of flying for themselves.
And how did the inhabitants of Schmallenberg behave in winter? The locomotion in winter, gliding on snow, quickly developed into a popular leisure sport, the roots of which can be traced back to the 19th century in Schmallenberg. Games, sports and fun for young and old are guaranteed in this theme area as well.

City Gate

Another historical entrance to the old town is brought to life by the reproduction of guard houses with a barrier from the 18th century.

Children and youth actions

Fun & Games

Collect stamps at great events for children and young people

There is a lot for the younger visitors to discover, marvel, sniff, try out, touch and feel on the entire market area. As a reward, stamps are collected and at the end there is a certificate of participation - a children's certificate of honour - and participation in a competition with great prizes.

The principle:
With a stamped card, which is available at the entrances to the market, the children and young people set off. Which actions are available and where they are located is indicated by signs throughout the market area. Each successfully completed action is stamped. With 12 collected stamps, which can be "worked out" at the more than 20 stations, the card is exchanged for a children's certificate of honour at the stand of the Sparkasse in Weststraße and the ticket goes into the lottery drum. The drawing of the winners takes place on Sunday from 18:30 hrs on the large festival stage at the church square (under notarial supervision).

The prizes:

  • Alu-City-Scooter from Rabattz
  • Food vouchers of the Pizzeria Capri

The anniversary year 2019

2019

The story

The year was 1244, when the settlement at the "Smale Castle" was granted the town charter, the right to hold markets and mint and the jurisdiction. But long before that, it is assumed that there was a castle here, which served to protect the monastery county. The first documented mention of it dates back to 1228.
Fights and wars are the reason why we see nothing more of the castle today. Nevertheless, these unrests also led to the fortification of the settlement... This is how history takes its course

Dive deeper into the time travel through the centuries ...

The logo

The logo also hides a time travel to our city. The first town seal of Schmallenberg from 1244 on the left symbolised the beginning. A journey through good and bad times with all the developments leads us to today, where the current city coat of arms can be seen on the right side.

Historical old town with St. Alexander's parish church in Schmallenberg

The motto

Time travel through the centuries

Without its eventful history Schmallenberg would not be what it is today. We are proud of it and look back with pleasure at how the town centre has been able to develop over the course of time. This is also made clear by our membership in the association of the 'Historical town and village centres of NRW. Our motto sums it up briefly: In our anniversary year we will illuminate our city history with all its facets.

The illustrated book

This book is THE work for the city anniversary - deliberately with little text and a lot of pictures. In doing so, we are also taking a journey through time again. In addition to many old photographs, special attention is paid to the past and present. Current photos in the same angle show details of how they can be found in the city today. This brings back memories and some readers understand why the houses in Schmallenberg have names (and rarely the house number is known). Even the price of 18,25€ has a historical meaning!
