A taste for the country

Project #G.A.S.T. presented itself at the International Green Week in Berlin

Schmallenberg/Berlin. The project #G.A.S.T. continues to make a name for itself nationwide. As a good example of an initiative for securing skilled labour and promoting rural areas, it was represented at the International Green Week in Berlin in January.
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the sponsor of the domestic skilled labour project, presented an extensive programme in several halls and at numerous events at Messe Berlin. A separate hall made "Lust aufs Land" (Desire for the countryside) - here the project #G.A.S.T. presented itself under the umbrella of the Land(auf)Schwung project "Heimvorteil HSK" (Home Advantage HSK), which was initiated by the Hochsauerlandkreis business development agency. Two other projects from Winterberg ("Hand ans Werk - Pack an in Winterberg, Hallenberg, Medebach") and Brilon ("Recruitment of doctors and medical personnel") were also represented there. All the Land(auf)Schwung projects in the HSK together were thus able to demonstrate what is feasible and possible within the framework of federal funding in the area of securing skilled workers.

In the "Rural Development" hall area, interested visitors met people and organisations who care about life in the countryside and good living conditions for local people. Voluntary commitment is of great importance for rural life and was therefore the focus of the BMEL's trade fair presentation this year. In this exciting environment, the Sauerland and especially the project #G.A.S.T. showed once again how valuable and liveable our rural region is and how volunteer work can look and work in a very concrete way.

The #G.A.S.T. project
Since May 2018, the project has been concerned with attracting and retaining well-trained professionals in the hotel and catering industry. The premise is to actively counteract the shortage of skilled workers and to develop joint measures which, for example, guarantee optimal training, enable existing skilled workers to continue their education, offer special appreciation and opportunities and, of course, generate new talent, whether from the region or beyond. For this purpose, under the leadership of the Verkehrsverein Schmallenberger Sauerland as the project sponsor and under the umbrella of the Schmallenberger Sauerland Tourism, a network has been formed which will support the project. Among the project partners are the city of Schmallenberg, DEHOGA - Schmallenberg, Schmallenberg Unternehmen Zukunft (SUZ), Sauerland Tourismus as well as the Südwestfalen Agentur. The model project 'Land(auf)Schwung' of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) enables the financing of various measures for this purpose as well as the provision of a project coordinator for 18 months.
