Ways and goals to fall in love

Hiking in the Schmallenberger Sauerland sets standards

Out for a few days. Leave stress and hectic pace behind, immerse yourself in the beauty and silence of nature, ground your senses and then relax and enjoy good things. This is how easily the wishes of most hikers can be expressed. But what does the individual guest perceive as beautiful, cosy and good? A question that the hosts in the Schmallenberger Sauerland have often been pursuing for generations with a lot of feeling and commitment. Not only within their own four walls, but also outdoors in nature.

Many services for hikers
15 years ago, the idea of the Rothaarsteig was born in the region, a signposting system leading throughout Europe was developed and the foundation stone of "New Hiking" was laid. Today, the Schmallenberger Sauerland is regarded as the leading destination for active pleasure holidaymakers throughout North Rhine-Westphalia thanks to its qualitatively and quantitatively unique range of paths and destinations. In addition to the most popular stages of the Rothaarsteig, the Forest Sculpture Trail, which is unique in Germany, the Sauerland Höhenflug and special theme trails, hikers will find many hosts here who offer everything that hikers value in their 3 to 5-star hotels - including tour advice, hiking information centre, equipment hire, luggage transfer, delivery and pick-up service, guided hikes and drying and cleaning rooms for shoes and clothing.

Free hiking bus multiplies radius of action
The region also relies on smart services: Those who holiday here not only travel free of charge with the local public transport system and the citizen buses, but also with the hiking and sightseeing bus from April to October. This multiplies the radius of action of active holidaymakers enormously and takes them daily (except on Fridays) up the ridges of the Rothaarsteig and Sauerland Höhenflug, to the Kahler Asten, into romantic valleys and idyllic mountain villages. It also travels to villages and hamlets which are hardly or not at all served by public transport due to their decentralised location and few inhabitants. In this way, the hiking freedom for the guests staying here begins virtually from their accommodation. The car stops, you take the hiking bus to the starting point of the planned hike and from there you walk in a relaxed manner and with as many stops as you like to one of the many places from which the hiking bus brings you back in the afternoon. If you wish to have an "open end" at the stopover, combine the hiking bus and the car, park your own car at the destination and from there take the hiking bus to the starting point.

Genuine and delicious
Because: in most of the more than 100 villages in the region, worthwhile stopovers are recommended, often with a long, honest tradition. Rare home-style cooking is served on polished tables, as are rustic snacks or surprising creations from the New German Cuisine. And all this in a charming, authentic style that is highly praised and appreciated by leading restaurant guides such as Guide Michelin, Gault Milau or Varta. Country. Love. Savoir vivre. just - completely relaxed and to enjoy, in a temporary home
