Basic information

The Schmallenberger Sauerland and the holiday region Eslohe

Figures, data, facts, the tourism mission statement and an annual outlook on the focal points of tourism in the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the holiday region of Eslohe - all further information for your background research can be found here.

Temporary home

Land. Love. Way of life. discover

Schmallenberg. Leave behind the stress and hectic of everyday life. Finding peace, enjoying the moment and life - simply a holiday: that's what the Schmallenberg Sauerland and the Eslohe holiday region stand for. A gently swinging landscape, picturesque half-timbered charm and passionate love of the homeland make the 108 villages and farmsteads in the region a picture-book backdrop. Whoever arrives here will find a temporary home - characterised by nature, relaxation and top performance.

Beds - as made for you

There are about 450 restaurants with about 6,300 beds. These include large wellness hotels with 4 and 5 stars as well as small, ambitious country inns or cosy guesthouses, farms and holiday apartments with and without family connections. Innovative cooperations such as the "Sauerland Hiking Inns", the "Rothaarsteig Quality Businesses", the "Family Hotels Sauerland" and the "Schmallenberger Kinderland" have adapted themselves completely to the needs of their guests. They guarantee their guests pleasantly hiking- and biking-specific or family- and toddler-friendly services. The icing on the cake is the Schmallenberger Sauerland Card: with this card, guests travel free of charge on the hiking and sightseeing bus through the region and enjoy free or reduced admission to many attractive leisure destinations.

Top for allergy sufferers

Schmallenberg and Eslohe have also adapted to the special needs of people with allergies. Allergy-friendly accommodations, restaurants, cafés, bakeries and supermarkets with appropriate offers make the region a certified allergy-friendly region according to the guidelines of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF).

Biking, hiking and more

Among hiking enthusiasts, the region is regarded as the cradle and "fillet piece" of the Rothaarsteig. Almost endless hiking possibilities traditionally characterise tourism. Extensive hiking services, an excellently developed and signposted network of paths, as well as interesting theme paths and cultural encounters along the way, today characterise a hiking quality which is second to none. A wide range of offers in terms of biking, climbing or golf make the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the holiday region Eslohe an attractive holiday destination for sportsmen and women of all kinds

Art and culture

Between impressive nature and dreamy looking half-timbered houses hides a cultural offer that is worth discovering. High-calibre exhibitions and museums, artistic craftsmanship and musical encounters of an international standard

Gastronomy with a heart

Regional and cordial - this is how the local gastronomy businesses present themselves to their guests. Potatoes from the neighbouring village, beef from the Sauerland pasture or honey from the beekeeper in the village: in many areas, regional purchases are made. Traditional cuisine is put on the table, sometimes briskly interpreted, but always of high quality and simply delicious. Enjoy your holiday also culinary.

Detailed information and competent advice around your holiday is available at the central guest information Schmallenberger Sauerland, Poststr. 7, 57392 Schmallenberg, phone: 02972 9740-0, daily from 8 to 21 o'clock, fax: 02972 974026, info@schmallenberger-sauerland.de, www.schmallenberger-sauerland.de. This counter world to everyday life can be reached from the conurbations on the Rhine, Main and Ruhr within two hours. Dutch people are looking forward to about one hour longer during their congestion-free and scenic journey.

Land. Love. Lifestyle. More than a mission statement.

Hiking, vitality and family holidays in the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the Eslohe holiday region.

Schmallenberg. Solid wood combined with tasteful decoration, comfortable mountain chalets with panoramic views from the bathtub, elegant SPAs with above-ground relaxing offers. Aromatic menus that melt in your mouth, honest regional cuisine of the highest quality. Hikes accompanied by the chef himself, with stops at traditional hunting lodges and holiday farms where children can discover the world between the cowshed and orchards..

The list is long, and those who come to the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the Eslohe holiday region for the first time experience a counter world to everyday life and are impressed by the vastness of the landscape, its peace and 108 sparkling clean half-timbered villages and courtyards. Only an hour or two by car from the centres on the Rhine, Main and Ruhr, the region fills its mission statement "Land. Love. Lifestyle" with life. Anyone who drives here wants to slow down and enjoy life authentically and with style. A wish that comes true, in nature as well as during a stopover - thanks to the offer and the authenticity of the restaurants.

Accommodation for all requirements

With around 6,000 beds distributed among 430 establishments, the diversity of the hosts in the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the Eslohe holiday region is unparalleled. For every demand, taste and purse, there is something to suit everyone. Traditional feel-good hotels in the 4 and 5-star range with generous wellness, fitness and leisure facilities are to be found here, as are somewhat smaller comfort hotels and inns in the 3 and 3-star superior segment. In addition, there are modernly equipped guesthouses and approx. 150 cosy holiday apartments in or near villages, which, including bakeries, cafés, children's playgrounds, inns etc., offer everything that keeps "nuts" (and fathers) away from the stove

In the hotel segment you will find mainly traditional, family-run houses, such as the Hotel Deimann, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. True to their family host tradition, the Deimann family took over the "Störmanns", located in the middle of Schmallenberg next to the church, the "good room" of the core town, so to speak. They lead the equally traditional Hotel Störmann into a new era with a lot of passion and skill. Holidaymakers and connoisseurs will find high-quality and at the same time uncomplicated accommodation and gastronomy here

Furthermore, the mountain village LiebesGrün with its 12 comfortable chalets is recommended. This year it was again awarded the Holiday Check-Award, as the best hotel in Germany and the most family-friendly hotel worldwide.

The range of allergy-friendly accommodations is increasingly in demand. More than 30 accommodations on the one hand, and numerous shopping and refreshment destinations on the other, have adapted to the special needs of allergy sufferers and make the region a certified "allergy-friendly region" according to the guidelines of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation

Hiking at a high level

The region has always been known for its sweeping landscapes and the sheer endless hiking possibilities. In recent years, the company has worked consistently to offer hiking holidaymakers well-prepared trails, complete signposting, tailor-made accommodation and perfect service. These efforts of the first quality region "Wanderbares Deutschland" can be seen: Local theme trails such as the "Gold Routes" or the 23 km long Forest Sculpture Trail with its 11 polarising installations by internationally renowned artists are very popular. In addition, in addition to the "fillet piece" of the Rothaarsteig, beautiful stages of the Sauerland High Altitude Trail and the Sauerland Forest Route await hikers here. Good to know: Guided hiking weeks and special theme offers are available almost every month. A detailed hiking tour database provides support in planning and navigation.

Find peace and quiet in the Heilstollen and during the Spiritual Summer

Being out and about in nature alone ensures deceleration and sustainable recharging of your batteries. Specially developed offers from various hotels in the field of medical wellness, as well as a healing gallery in Nordenau also ensure well-being and allow you to breathe a sigh of relief in the true sense of the word. The series of events of the "Spiritual Summer" from the beginning of June to September also aims to let people breathe a sigh of relief, albeit more in the figurative, i.e. spiritual sense. Concerts, art installations, meditations, guided tours, readings, exhibitions and much more offer the opportunity to reflect on one's own inner life - both in the middle of nature and in historical or spiritually charged places.

Discover art and culture

They want to be discovered: Art and culture present themselves in the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the holiday region Eslohe in a multifaceted form. Music, for example, can be found in the impressive building of the South Westphalia Music Education Centre in Bad Fredeburg in the form of top-class, often international concerts. The Südwestfälische Galerie and the "kunsthaus alte mühle" with the "Lenneatelier" invite you to changing, top-class exhibitions and events and allow an uncomplicated encounter with art. It is also worth visiting the many unusual galleries where handicraft and art flow together as a matter of course. Bronze smiths, metal sculptors, glass designers, painters, gallery owners, antique dealers, but also producers of typical regional products have settled in inspiring places and complement the tourist offer in a typical way: on a high level and deeply rooted in the homeland. An equally impressive and interesting part of this homeland are the Romanesque churches in Wormbach and Berghausen with their extraordinary paintings. Interested guests are welcome - whether in hiking gear or in a suit

Kinderland, free holidays, forest school and free admission

The region pays special attention to families with children: Under the name "Schmallenberger Kinderland", 27 holiday farms have consistently adapted to the needs of families with babies and (small) children. Whoever books a holiday here can leave everything - from baby monitors to changing mats - at home without any worries. Because the apartments, which are guaranteed smoke-free, are optimally equipped down to the last detail. A fixed component of this farm holiday is also always an exciting farm programme and guarantees plenty of space between the stable and the holiday apartment

First class holidays for the whole family are also made possible by thirteen well-known hotels in the Schmallenberger Sauerland. Under the brand "Family Hotels in the Sauerland", the owner-managed 3 and 4-star hotels guarantee a successful combination of comfort, enjoyment and playful nature experiences. Children are expressly welcome here, as evidenced, for example, by their family-compatible rooms and the extensive play and leisure facilities of the houses

The region's extensive holiday programme is a perfect match: In the NRW Holidays 2017 it will impress with extraordinary offers such as Blacksmithing, graffiti, tailoring and sculpting workshops in the youth art school, devil's violin making, night walks through the bison wilderness, games and fun on horseback, bread baking, farm visits, spoon punching, climbing courses, excursions with the rangers of the State Forest and Wood Company in the footsteps of wild cats, lynxes & co.

Those who prefer to explore the region on their own: The family map with a large hidden object picture and many excursion tips leads you safely to the top destinations for young and old. Families should definitely take the Schmallenberger Sauerland Card, which is issued free of charge by their hosts, with them on these tours. With this card, they can take the hiking and sightseeing bus through the region free of charge and enjoy free or reduced admission to many leisure destinations

Bicycle routes for families and leisure cyclists

The Kinderland Trekking Route and the Sauerland Cycle Ring are attractive offers, not only for active families. On the 42 km long Kinderland trekking route, little explorers can experience animals and plants in the forest and on the farm, playgrounds to let off steam and ankle-deep streams to cool off. The 84 km long SauerlandRadring leads, mostly on former railway tracks, through extensive deciduous and coniferous forests to contemporary witnesses of former industrial and handicraft culture, to small museums and collections, a 700 m long bat tunnel, attractive swimming pools and other excursion and stopover destinations

Of interest to pleasure cyclists: the supplementary 40 km long Hennesee loop of the SauerlandRadring with connection to the RuhrtalRadweg near Meschede, the 31 km long "Renewable Energy Tour" with 16 exciting stations as well as the 150 and 113 km long, scenic cycle paths Lenneroute and Ruhr-Sieg-Radweg.
Those who don't trust their stamina, despite the mostly low gradient of these routes, can rent an e-bike on site and cycle with a switchable electric drive. Depending on the strain on the battery, this guarantees 60 to 100 km of cycling fun with perfect support

Where the golfers heart beats faster

Playing golf in an impressive setting, this is also possible in the Schmallenberger Sauerland: on the panoramic 27-hole course of the Winkhausen Golf Club. Guest players can look forward to a 25% green fee reduction when they stay at one of the region's leading hotels. Golfers and those interested in golf without a license are also offered a six-hole short course and extensive practice facilities. The 18-hole golf course in Sellinghausen offers further attractive possibilities to indulge in the game with clubs and concentration in impressive nature

Tip: Taster lessons and courses are offered on both courses during the whole season from about April to November. Also intensive courses, combined hotel packages and open competitions. Above all, the FALKE Golf Marathon in July and the Sauerland Open, which will combine golf and culinary delights at their best from 15 to 17 June 2017.
